Generative Series

My Generative Series is a sequence of long-form generative artworks. Each one is a tokenized collectible on the platform fx(hash) where the compositional parameters are randomized for each edition.

This work was the starting point for my custom generative visual synthesizer which I use for audiovisual performances and video art.

The Sprawl

2022-05-27

The sprawl. A shimmering maze of light and beauty. A living, breathing, churning mess thrown into chaos by a long forgotten runtime exception. Automaton ghosts operate on hard-coded rulesets, grasping to understand the zero-player game in which they are trapped. Individuals are lost to the great invisible broken machine as exponential memory leaks spin out endless reconfigurations, expanding and expanding for a momentary glimpse at a fraction of reality.

Colorforms

Possible forms:

☁️ Gaseous: Chaotic wisp energy. Constantly changing and evolving. 💧 Liquid: Cascading colors on a slowly evolving pattern. 🪨 Solid: Starts as gaseous and settles into a semi-fixed crystalline structure.

Possible palettes include any combination of two: Colorful, Monochromatic, Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple. Weighted towards colorful.

Megamix Feedback Study

2021-12-08

An aesthetic study to experiment with how feedback works on a 2D canvas. Feedback patterns are changed every 100 frames, and the number of feedback zones is regulated by a sine wave. All feedback zones are modified by a common drift parameter which influences them to slowly move in the same direction.

Color is based on time of day:

1:00 - Chartreuse 2:00 - Red 3:00 - Magenta 4:00 - Pastel Red 5:00 - Cyan 6:00 - Yellow 7:00 - Purple 8:00 - Light Blue 9:00 - Electric Blue 10:00 - Lime Green 11:00 - Orange 12:00 - White 12:59 to 1:00 - Surprise

Megamix

2021-12-04

Each edition has a set number of colors which bounce within the frame. Each time a color hits the canvas edge the feedback pattern changes. Feedback level is also regulated by a sine wave, oscillating between many and few feedback zones. Every 1000 frames the colors stop moving for a while, letting the feedback take over and generate a fixed pattern and a moment of calmness.

Palettes can be small (2-4 colors), medium (5-8 colors) or large (9-12 colors). ~5% chance for a monochromatic color palette.

2021-11-25

A digital generative painting study to push pixels with the same technique I use to push oil paint. Four tries on the foreground, then back to the background canvas color before iterating on foreground again. 200x200 pixel continuation of my physical painting work.

While a physical painting often takes multiple tries to finalize the composition and ends with a dry canvas, the generative composition is never complete- always reworking itself with pixels that never quite dry.
